Our new home is now in Ottawa

Posted by Ruby | 30 Dec, 2007
A decision to move to Ottawa was made at the end of November and before Christmas Ruby was already in her new home in Richmond. Donna and Dave West have a nice small farm with 5 horses, a large indoor arena and a well-lit outdoor sand ring. Ruby is going out with Donna's first horse, Nelly, a 23-year old palomino QH. In the future Katie, a TB/Belgian cross will join these two girls.

Like a new horse

Sometimes it takes a village to get a horse back on the track... Sandra recommended that I contact Mary Bell, a vet who also does chiro and acupuncture. She came last Wednesday and defined that Ruby's feet are sore. Paul put special shoes and wedges on last Friday. What a difference! Ruby has not locked even once since and her movement is totally different. No more stocking up etc. On the flip side, she can't go out with the herd anymore but that doesn't seem to upset her at all.

My horse is a hairy mammoth

I finally got the new clipper and some blades. I bathed Ruby in the afternoon after riding and then went back at 8 PM to clip her. It was easier and way more fun than I thought it would be! It is amazing how hairy she was... You could make a lot of sweaters out of that hair.

What a hack!

Today Kevin came to hack with us, however, on a bike since he is definitely not a (horse) rider. At first Ruby was trying to pull a fast one and refused to leave the property... A 10-minute fight later we were on our way. We crossed the highway at Jigs Hollow and went to discover some new gravel roads. I had looked at some maps on the Internet ahead of time. This one road, Crook's Track, was supposed to end but it just kept on going and we ended up crossing a small bridge over the Grand and discovered even more gravel roads on the other side. Ruby was absolutely drenched by the end which means that I have to clip her as soon as possible.

We made it to the other side

On Sunday I gathered my courage and set on a quest to go hacking on the other side of Northfield on Jiggs Hollow, a great gravel road with lots of hills. Due to Norhtfield being very busy, Kevin came on bike with us. Traffic wasn't a problem for Ruby and we had fun chasing Kevin up the hills.

Back to square one

Today Ruby's right leg started to lock up. So after the treatment she was good on both sides for a while, then the locking started on the left and now on the right.

The weather was great so i took her down to road to New Jerusalem. It was the mennonite rush hour with everybody coming from church with their buggies. One lady's horse was actually more scared of Ruby than Ruby was of her!

Frigging stiffle!

Posted by Ruby | 17 Oct, 2007
It has been going pretty well for the past week. No major reaction for the blistering but no locking either. Then yesterday Ruby freaked out outside while riding and started cantering to the right. She was all over the place, not being able to keep clean canter. Today her left hind was locking pretty badly. Typically it has been the other side that has locked more! Anyway, there is no way around exercise so I went hacking and added some cantering into our repertoire. It was fun and she seemed to do a lot better on a straight line.

Plan B

Posted by Ruby | 9 Oct, 2007
Since the hormone injections didn't really work (maybe made the problem worse), it was time to try plan B: blistering the ligaments. Dr. Hancey came this morning and injected both sides. Following this, I lunged Ruby at noon, 2 PM and 4 PM for 10 minutes of trot each time. I expected her to get really stiff and her stifles to balloon, but nothing special happened. She didn't seem to mind the exercise at all. In the evening I took her for a little trot hack down the road. I don't know if it was only my imagination, but it felt like something was missing (clunkiness? sideways shuffle?) and as if her trot was smoother...

Back to the schedule

I have scheduled jumping lessons with Giselle for Tuesdays. It's been a while and boy does it help! Giselle trains with Frankie Chesler-Ortiz now and she had some new tricks in her bag. 1) Need to canter faster and hold more, try to get a close spot, 2) Lift inside rein instead of opening it in corners, 3) In combinations, sit up faster after the obstacle.

She's a machine

I came back from the vacation and tested out the new olympic-size sand jumper ring. Love at the first sight!

Giselle rode Ruby while I was gone. She said that Ruby cleared the 4-bar (120 cm with 120 cm spread).

Ruby enjoys the new ring and goes like a steam engine. I think the cooler weather has given her more energy. I felt a little bit rusty and the new riding boots were annoying but we managed to do some jumps up to 3'3". It is great that going over is never the problem, I can trust Ruby. Sometimes we get bad spots and mainly take off too close.

Got a taste of cross-country

Posted by Ruby | 26 Aug, 2007
We were in a combined show in Cambridge today with Giselle and Benge. After the official dressage and jumping part was done, Giselle and I schooled cross-country. It was SOO much fun! Ruby really enjoyed it and wanted to catch up to Benge.

Stake and steak

Last weekend we went to two shows: Twinholm jumper and Conestoga Cadora dressage shows. At Twinholm we came second (out of maybe 15) for the 3' stake class and won $15! Afterwards Kevin and I celebrated my "victory" at the Keg. Steak dinner for the stake winner....

Jane seems like a good match for Ruby

Posted by Ruby | 5 Aug, 2007
Yesterday I met with Jane who is interested in co-boarding Ruby. Jane used to ride a lot when she was in Britain. Ruby was all annoyed about missing her breakfast but forgot about it when Jane rode her in the arena. To complete the workout, I free-jumped Ruby.

Almost perfect show

We went to the Twinholm (Burlington) jumper show on Saturday. What made this show extra exciting was the fact that I had promised to trailer Tanya's horse Tex as well. Thanks to some practising, Ruby climbed into the trailer like a little angel after Tex. We actually took the highways to Twinholm and it went very smoothly.

Ruby & I did 22'9" clear round, 2'9" with immediaqte jump-off and 3' speed classes. I was very happy as we did all clear rounds and Ruby seemed even more at ease than in the last show. There was no need to "push" her through the course which was great. I didn't want to do sharp turn so we weren't fast enough to win. However, we placed 8th in the 3' speed class despite almost having taken a wrong obstacle due to the number being knocked over.

Unfortunately Ruby didn't load as well on the way back... In fact we had to fight with her for 40 minutes. At the end she gave up and followed the grain bucket to the trailer. We were in a hurry so that was quite annoying!

Maiden voyage of the "Snack Van"

Just back from Orlando, I had time to practise loading Ruby into my new trailer only a couple of times on Saturday.  Kevin and I removed the divider and got Ruby almost in with the help of some extensive carrot bribery. Later in the evening Sandra helped me feed Ruby in the trailer so that time we actually managed to get her fully in and close the doors. I can't believe how difficult and stressful this is!!!

The Conestoga Cadora trillium show at Brookside was on Sunday. Kevin was there to help out. I saved Ruby's breakfast to lure her into the trailer. We did get her in fairly fast but not without a cost: she freaked out and backed out hitting her head in the ceiling which resulted into a cut... Blood was everywhere!

The show went OK. Uli didn't show up and Kevin was furious to stay there all day.  I did training level and this time Ruby was more comfortable with the ring. We got mostly 5s with the comment that she should be more rounded in the frame. I think we'll get there fairly easily. To top it all, Ruby amazed us by loading into the trailer like a little angel on the first try! That's my girl!!!
