Tips for driving practical test

theorytest | 19 May, 2012 08:44

When you are driving on the roads, you need to be a very responsible driver. Your one mistake can not only affect your life but there are chances you would put other innocent lives in danger too.

Driving can be fun but also can be dangerous activity if driver doesn't take proper care.

Many times life doesn't give you a second chance. Especially if you are driving. Mistake made during driving can affect you physically, mentally. Many people take long time to overcome the trauma after facing the mishap.

We all know do's and dont's of driving, but not all practice those.

Few days back there was an incidence where a young girl died in an accident while texting while driving. Ironically her text message was something like 'you should not text while driving'.

For all learner drivers, DSA has thoughtfully prepared a very good syllabus that covers all important aspects of driving. Car, Motorbike theory testhas sections on vulnerable road users, road and traffic signs, speed limits, important documents etc.

Test also consists of DSA hazard perception section, which is like driving on the road - identifying, judging, and reacting to hazards from driver's point of view.

So basically every learner driver has to go through the DSA theory test preparation, driving practical test to prove he/she is well prepared for the road. Then only he/she gets full professional driving license,Still accidents happen! Why?

Because we just forget all the training we had been given while DSA theory test preparation.Driving theory test questions, Free hazard perception test, mock theory test preparation is not just passing your driving test, but they are actually designed for practicing on the road.

These days communication has become very easy and many have got almost addicted to it.There are people who can't stay away from communication gadgets. And that is the main reason of accidents on the road.

Drivers tend to forget simple things -

Do not accept/make call when you are on wheels - All phone calls divert driver's attention from the road.

Law doesn't allow you to use hand held mobile while you are on the wheels, not even at traffic signals.

If the call is too important, park at safe place then take/make that call. But even for an important call you are not allowed to use the hard shoulder of the motorway. That is reserved for emergency breakdown.

If you know someone is driving, don't call them, or if you come to know someone is driving ask them to call back after they have parked their vehicle at safe place.

If all of us remember these simple things, take all possible precautions while driving, then the purpose of driving theory test, driving practical test,Hazard perception test would be solved.

How to cut down Driving test waiting lists

theorytest | 09 May, 2012 07:11

DSA Current practical driving test is currently extended to the point whereby learners have to wait month for practical test date.

Both theory test and Driving practical test can be booked online. At the moment, although candidates need to wait for 1month or so for practical test, but DSA theory test date waiting list is not so long.

The Driving Standard Agency is set to examine a new approach by different way of delivering the driving test. Number of motorists getting on the road to acquire their driving license, but only few test centres and instructors are around to conduct the government estimation. Driving Standards Agency has been working hard to find a solution to the problem of the ever-growing list of driving hopefuls.

The precise process of examination will remain the same but as a result driving exam can be taken as revise. According to the Driving Standard Agency all the local authority buildings, hotels and even leisure centres will potentially get the chance of becoming a test centre. With the new approach trial is been taken to the eight location. Feedback from the initial test is good and the scheme being extended and rolling out across five new locations.

But what does it mean for a driver ready to take to the open road with all but a piece of paper stopping them from doing so?

By considering the candidates benefit in local services from the improving driving test benefits Driving Standard Agency is planning to get more flexible scheme, so that the candidate should not wait for the test for long time.

With the review of the candidate's advantage from the improvements in local services the Driving Standard Agency has come up with new innovative scheme where the candidates need not have to wait for a month- long. Official DSA examiners will still conduct the dsa practical test. And "on-test" drivers will continue to receive the same standard of assessment. They will also get the license privilege if and when they pass.

Road Safety Minister, Mike Penning, said: "We have to be more flexible and innovative in delivering driving tests to make sure that we are offering people the best service possible wherever they live and I am delighted that these first trials have proved successful.

"We are now extending the trial so that more candidates will be able to benefit from a service that is convenient as well as being cost effective."

So, the dreaded driving test waiting lists that can halt a learner's bid for freedom after a successful training period look to potentially be a thing of the past under the new initiative - great news for fresh-faced motorists looking to gain their freedom.

You can book theory test, practical test online using DSA website.

Importance of helmet while riding

theorytest | 07 May, 2012 05:59

There are people who ride a bike for enjoyment but there are some who are in need to reach from one place to another as cheaply and as fast as possible. People always forget their safety before riding bike. Riders should try to avoid careless riding and wear helmet for safety. Wearing a helmet is one of the important equipments used for riding. According to the Driving Standard Agency DSA helmet is compulsory for the motorbike riders and learner riders must pass their dsa theory test, dsa hazard perception and Practical driving test to ride motorbike on the road.

Wearing a helmet not only helps riders to protect from the accidents but it protects your head from the injuries. When you're working or riding a motorbike it's very imperative to have the correct safety gear. A motorbike helmet is the most vital item of safety equipment, but it will only provide enough protection if it's the right type and fits properly.

People should be assured that the helmet must have undergone anti-scratch anti-fog healing. Always make sure that eye shades should not touch the outer shell of the helmet because there are the chances of scratches. Always make sure that you have passed motorbike theory test and then move for motorbike practical test. This will help you to understand the theory as well as practical test both. While riding riders should make sure that they are aware of hazards on the road.

A motorbike helmet needs to fit properly. Make sure it surrounds the whole of your head. Make sure that the helmet straps are adjustable go tight enough to fit around your face. It's also a good idea to try on the same brand of helmet one size larger and one size smaller to make doubly sure you really have the optimal fit. Some helmets offer extra comfort by means of air vents, which can be easily slid open or closed to allow more air to circulate while riding.

People who are new learner rider must go for the lighter model rather than the heavier one. Maintaining the perfect balance also counts a lot. After you get the suitable helmet for your child or yourself, always be very careful in storing them at the proper site. Do not place them in a high or rough spots. The risk of scratching or reflection for a costly bike helmet should also be avoided. The helmet should not be placed on the load or mirrors that are located on the sides. If this kind of thing is repeated more often then the interior stuffing of the helmet gets damaged and thus it cannot be used over again and again.

Wearing a correct type of helmet will not only reduces your risk but also will be protective enough.
Take your own time to choose your helmet and enjoy your ride.

Why child seat belt is important while driving

theorytest | 07 May, 2012 04:23

Most people love to drive a car and go out with their family. One of the simplest and the convenient techniques to protect yourself is to wear a seatbelt. It is well proven that seat belt save the lives.

While preparing for driving theory test and hazard perception test part of DSA theory test, the road safety majors are covered in the preparation topics.

The importance of adult seat belts, child seat belt is covered in the syllabus of theory test and Hazard perception, but most learner drivers forget this in later stages of driving.

It is very important to wear seat belts while driving. Also you must make sure the passengers are also wearing them. It is a responsibility of a driver to make sure the passengers are safe while driving.

Seat belts are designed in such a way that it gives a high level of protection in the event of a crash. They are designed to adjust automatically to fit the user, to be convenient and easy to use. Wearing a seat belt is not only important to the drivers but it is also important to the child sitting in front.

If your child uses a child's car seat, the seat must be fitted properly in your vehicle. One should always check a child car seat is fitted correctly and get your child comfortable. Child seat belt is designed in such a way that child is been fitted properly and sits comfortably. If the child is less then age12 then they have to make use of child seat belt. Child seat belt is designed according to the child's weight. If they are at the age of 12 or more then they can use adult seat belt.

Car seats are designed according to the children's weight. Label on the seat shows the weight range is suitable for. The weight ranges are divided into the following groups:

Group 0 and Group 0+ rear-facing baby seats:

Group 0 and Group 0+ -
These are rear-facing baby seats suitable for babies up to 13 kilogram's. Baby seats have their own (integral) straps. The adult seat belt or ISOFix system is used to hold the baby seat in place.

Group I -
These are forward or rearward-facing baby seats for children between 9 and 18 kilogram's. These seats also have their own straps or impact shield and are held in place by the adult seat belt or ISOFix system. In a seat with a front airbag, make sure a forward-facing child seat is as far back from the airbag as possible.

Group II -
These are forward-facing child car seats (booster seats) for children from 15 to 25 kilogram's and may have backs or side wings. Child car seats don't have their own straps - your child is held in using the adult seatbelt and the seat is held in place by the adult seatbelt and/or the ISOFix system. Make sure you position a forward-facing booster seat as far back as possible from a frontal airbag.

Group III -
These are booster cushions for children above 22 kilogram's. Some seats cover more than one group and can be used as your child grows. Check on the seat label. When your child reaches 22 kilogram's, they can use a booster cushion. These may not have backs but raise your child in the car's seat so they can use the adult seat belt.

While driving people should be aware of potential hazards on the road and wearing the seat belts can reduce the injuries of that person as it stops that person to come out of his seat and hit other interiors of the car which is also called second impact.

Despite of risk of serious injuries, and facts that seat belts can be effective in saving the life of people sitting in the vehicle, many people still neglect the use of seat belts while driving.

Driving theory test examination process for learner drivers

theorytest | 01 May, 2012 04:07

Before you can learn to drive a motorcycle, car or moped, Yor must have a provisional driving licence. Your driving licence process starts with applying for your provisional licence. For this, you can go to DVLA office or local post office to get the appropriate form and fill it and attach a passport size photo and £50.00 fee for the licence.

DVLA aims to deliver your driving license to you within three weeks of receiving your application form. It might take longer if we have to check on your health or personal details. You will need to wait for your new license to arrive before driving. Please allow at least three weeks for your license to arrive before contacting DVLA.

When you will receive your provisional licence, you can drive your car with L plates with a driver who has held a full driving license for 3 years or more and his age is 21 years or more.

Once you have a valid provisional driving licence you can book driving test. Waiting times vary from region to region, but the target is that 95 per cent of theory test candidates receive an appointment date within two weeks of their preferred date.

After Theory test booking you will appear for your theory test. The theory test is made up of two parts; the multiple choice part and the hazard perception part.

The theory test is a computer-based test at various tests centers around the country. For car and motorbike theory test you'll be asked randomly selected 45 multiple-choice questions and 5 marks case study style questions in 57 minutes and you need to get at least 43 right to pass. For Lorries and buses you'll be asked 60 questions in 70 minutes and the pass mark is 51 out of 60. You have 57 minutes to complete the test. There is a 15-minute practice session you can work through before starting the tests.

Hazard perception test:
This part of the theory test requires you to view 14 hazard video clips on the computer screen of approximately one minute each. You are required to watch these clips as if you were the driver. There will be 15 hazards to find - at least one on each clip. However, one clip will have 2 hazards. The hazard perception test clips will not contain any sound.

Candidates can score up to five marks on each hazard and the test contains 15 scoreable hazards.

You click either the left or right mouse button whenever you think you can see a hazard developing. The speed at which you click the mouse button as a hazard develops will determine your score for that particular hazard perception clips. You can score between 0 and 5 on each hazard.

The pass mark for this part of the test is 44 out of 75 (i.e. 15 hazards x 5) for car drivers and motorcycle riders. Those taking LGV or PCV (lorry or bus) tests must score at least 50 out of 75.

If you pass one part and fail the other, you'll fail the whole test, and you'll need to take both parts again. Once you have passed the theory test you can then apply to take your driving practical test (car practical test or motorcycle practical test).

Common reasons for failing your practical driving test

theorytest | 21 April, 2012 03:48

Learner drivers, who want to pass their practical driving test, must prepare driving test with confidence and avoid some common mistakes that will cause failure in practical driving test.

Proper use of steering failure:
When you are driving your vehicle you must control on your vehicles steering. This category involves a lot of care of the steering wheel and the control of it. Don't cross your hands on the wheel, Allow steering wheel to spin back after a turn or drive with any hands off the wheel for any longer than they have to be.

Proper use of gears failure:
In normal driving, Gears plays a very important role to control the car. Before you move away, make sure you are in the right gear. When slowing down or coming to a stop, use the brakes to slow down the car. Remember that you should not use gears. If you are in emergency situations, you can use gears for braking. In general rule, Move into 2nd gear as soon as you move from stationary, 3rd gear at 20mph, 4th gear at 30mph, and 5th gear at 40mph.

Problems with parking manoeuvres:
One of the hardest manoeuvres is reverse parking. On the road, probably the most used manoeuvre is Reverse parking. In this manoeuvre, the purpose to test your observation, accuracy, control over vehicle and clutch while moving backwards. When reversing keep slow and giving yourself a plenty of time to reverse and observe cyclists, pedestrians and other vehicles if they seen then stop your vehicle.

Drive alongside a parked car and reverse back within the space of two car lengths without hitting the kerb and whilst observing for other road users.

Incorrectly reversing around a corner:
In this manoeuvre, the purpose is to test your Control, accuracy and observation. Lack of observation and hitting the curb and is a common reason to fail your test. During the reversing, use an appropriate speed. Keep slow and giving yourself enough time to judge your distances correctly.

Failure to drive at road junctions:
If you are driving over a junction, you must slow down your vehicle and check your mirror that helps to make an emergency stop. If you want to turn, check signal to turn and your mirrors, and slow down your vehicle while turning. A common test fail with junctions is limit lines. Lack of observation and fast driving in junctions results fail in test.

Effective use of mirrors Failure:
Wrong use of mirrors is a common mistake, especially when turning and changing lane. Check your mirrors if change speed, direction change and slowing down. Between 25 to 50% of your driving time should be glancing in mirrors.

Failure to drive properly turning right:
Use the correct mirrors and indicate when turning right. It can be difficult to Judge the correct time to turn. Observe an appropriate gap in the oncoming traffic and Wait when traffic goes on. You know how long it takes for you to turn right; the aim is not to hold other people up.

Too slowly driving:
When are driving over the speed limit or drive too slowly, the examiner will fail you. Drive at the speed limit and not unnecessarily slow when the road you are driving is safe and clear. Very slow driving slow can be frustrating for other road users.

Motorcyclists, lorry and bus drivers Safety improvements

theorytest | 21 April, 2012 02:33

Measures to boost safety for motorcyclists and lorry and bus drivers have been put forward in Parliament.

The measures - which also strengthen requirements for driving examiners and impact on the rules for drivers towing trailers - will come in to force on 19 January 2013 as part of new European requirements aimed at improving road safety.

The changes are being implemented by the Department for Transport in conjunction with the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) and the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA).

The main aspects of the new rules are:

Motorcyclists - Access to more powerful bikes will be staged subject to competence, age and previous experience. The minimum age to ride the largest bikes without previous experience will rise from 21 to 24.

Licence renewals for bus and lorry drivers - At present, drivers of medium-sized and large buses and lorries need to renew their licences every five years once they reach the age of 45. Over 45s also need to demonstrate their fitness to drive through a full medical report. From 2013, all new or renewed bus and lorry licences will be renewable every five years. However, drivers under 45 will not require a full medical report and will still only need to renew their photograph every 10 years. All other drivers and riders will continue to renew their driving licences every 10 years as is currently the case.

Driving examiners - Compulsory initial qualification, periodic training and quality assurance checks will be required for driving examiners. Britain already fulfils most of these requirements but the new rules will enhance the Driving Standards Agency's existing arrangements.

Trailer towing - Under the new rules car drivers will be limited to towing 3.5 tonnes.

DSA chief executive, Rosemary Thew, said:

"Britain already has some of the safest roads in the world. These changes build on our existing standards and recognise the importance of our examiners' professionalism. They will also help to ensure that new motorcyclists gain the right skills and experience before riding bigger bikes."

DVLA chief executive, Simon Tse, said:

"These changes will provide a useful additional reminder for bus and lorry drivers. They will help to ensure that drivers of these vehicles will continue to operate to high levels of levels of safety by ensuring that they are fit to drive."

The European requirements are being introduced in Great Britain in line with feedback from a public consultation, which included responses from driver and rider training bodies, trade associations and road safety groups.

Driving theory test with touch screen computer

theorytest | 20 April, 2012 02:47

About driving theory test -

There are two parts of driving theory test i.e. multiple-choice test and the hazard perception test. Both the test must be passed in the same attempt to get theory test certificate. Once you clear driving theory test then only you will be allowed to appear for driving practical test.

Multiple-choice test is the first part of driving theory test which consist of 50 questions out of which you need to answer 43 questions right and the time limit is 57 minutes. You can also go for a practice session of the multiple choice questions to get used to the layout of the test. This session is being designed to test your understanding for the theory behind driving.

Hazard perception test is the second part of theory test in which you will be shown 14 clips of 1 minute each having 15 hazards in all (1 clip will have 2 hazards respectively). Once you are done with hazard perception you will be invited to answer few customer survey questions. This session is designed to test your alertness of potential hazards whilst driving.

For the hazard perception test there are no separate versions for different vehicles e.g. car, bike, heavy vehicle etc, each vehicle category takes the same test, however the pass mark is different for different categories of tests.

If you pass one part and fail the other you will fail the whole DSA theory test, and need to attempt for both the test again.

About touch screen system:

A touch screen is an electronic visual display that can identify the existence and position of a touch within the display area.

The touch screen has two main attributes:

Firstly, it enables one to cooperate directly with what is displayed, rather than indirectly with a cursor controlled by a mouse or touchpad. Secondly, it lets one do so without requiring any intermediate device that would need to be held in the hand. The touch screen system has been carefully designed to make sure it is easy to use.
  • Candidate can also work through a practice session for up to 15 minutes to get used to the system before actually starting their test.
  • To answer a question the candidate simply touches their choice of answer from the listed answers on the computer screen.
  • To take online theory test for driving theory test candidate use touch screen computer system.
  • Touch screen is preferred because it is easy to use or user friendly.
  • During examination if a candidate faces any problem or finds difficult to use the new system staff will be on hand to help them.
  • The system has been carefully designed so those candidates that are colour blind can use it.
  • The system has the option for dyslexic candidate to listen to the test being read in English through a headset.
Driving theory test with touch screen computer system:

All candidates for the driving theory test are now using the new 'touch screen computer system' to take their test as it is easy to use.
